Tyre guidance. The legal stuff

The legal limit for a tyre in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its complete circumference.

As a tyre wears, the distance it takes to stop your car increases significantly, especially when the tread gets below 3mm.

If your own safety doesn't seem to bother you, maybe the risk of a £2,500 fine and three penalty points on your licence for a worn tyre will? That’s per tyre, too. If all four tyres are worn below the legal limit, you could potentially lose your licence and face a £10,000 fine.

Winter Tyres

Winter tyres have been developed for temperatures below 7C so they're not only for use in the snow.

The tread is quite different from a standard summer tyre in that more natural rubber is used in its construction meaning the tyre is softer allowing it to keep contact with the road surface.

Stopping distances become shorter with winter tyres too, up to 4.8 metres shorter compared to summer tyres at 62 mph in the wet below 7C
